Trust: The New Reach…Now More Than Ever

Ah, trust—the key to successful communication and lasting relationships. This blog discusses strategies for building trust and expanding your reach. I explore the value of meaningful connections and how to foster genuine engagement in today’s communication landscape.

Recently, I took part in a media relations course, a fundamentals tutorial. It was fun, engaging, and informative, and it piqued my curiosity when the genius instructor said, “Trust is the new reach.” It is a simple statement, but one that resonated with me.

Is trust not one of the main currencies in today’s digital era? How invaluable is trust in an age of disinformation? Unlike traditional advertising, earned media (through PR outreach) offers the kind of credibility money cannot buy. But trust must come first.

One of my best-known clients is a well-trusted business owner who is the face of his brand and a credible spokesperson. Without naming names (you’re welcome to search him out on my website), he’s cultivated a loyal following by consistently delivering value and listening to his audience.

I recall seeing a line-up of enthusiastic customers seeking genuine insights from him. My client took the time to listen, respond, and offer thoughtful feedback to each person. He earned their trust through genuine social engagement and by being available to their needs.

Another aspect that sets him apart is his approach to media interviews. Instead of focusing solely on self-promotion, he prioritizes sharing valuable tips and advice. This approach helps him gain the trust of his audience and positions him as a sought-after authority by prioritizing trust and credibility.

Today, building trust seems harder than ever. This client emphasized the importance of listening to your audience, being transparent, and sharing valuable insights to build credibility. By developing authentic engagement and fostering a true connection with your audience, you can build trust and watch your reach grow.
